Who here likes their local utility? If so, raise your hand...no, no show of hands?
As I am sitting here, I don't think I can think of a single instance where someone has said they like their utility providers. While I think everyone would not hesitate to get rid of their utility, we know with today's solar technology, that is not possible for everyone just yet.
However, for many homes and business, an off grid system can be a cost effective, reliable solution for said home or business when starting from scratch. When a new building is being proposed, there are many small criteria that can be met that will allow a home or business to be built off grid, with no connection to the utility.
For those that already have a utility connection, today's solar grid tie systems are a way to help reduce or eliminate the purchase (on a net basis) of electricty from your utility; however, as long as you have a utility connection, you will be subject to fees such as: transmission, distribution, administration, etc...all the charges that raise the ire of consumers!
So, where did this post come from?? Here is the article that inspired this post
Utilities Push Back Against Solar
So what can you do...well, if you're building in a location without a current utility service, at least look at your off grid options! You may find, instead of the high cost of installing utility power, you can purchase a off grid solar system and be your own utility provider!
