Innovation is what is going to drive the industry foward.
In the last couple of years, as governments around the world have cut back on traditional subsidies (Feed in Tariffs) for the solar industry, the industry has fought these cut backs with an energy that would be better directed towards working on solutions that will drive the industry foward in the way of lower cost, better performing equipment.
The traditional method for the industry has been to offer generous Feed In Tariffs (FITs), which has been great for capacity, but also has keep technology, more or less, status quo. During the golden era of FITs, companies where so focused on building capacity that innovative break throughs were low on the priority list.
Sunfind Solar Products prides ourselves as the little innovative company that can! As a company, we focus heavily on innovation that will provide better performing, lower cost systems to the market. This is already shows in the systems we offer and we have several exciting products in development that will make their way to market in the coming years.
So, how does this all relate to industry incentives? One, we are not in favour of FITs, as this mechanism drives status quote and is a costly incentive to rate payers (both in capital AND public opinion). Second, we do favour a long term incentive mechanism that focuses more on innovation than capacity. Innovation will drive 'real' capacity (not capacity based on lucrative incentives) and those companies that invest in the human and mechanical resources to achieve the needed innovation should be rewarded for that investment, which drives capacity (sales) and, in turn, further innovation...and the cylce continues.
The last couple of years have seen many players in the industry fade away, with even heavier attrition and consolidation on the horizon. The industry, by 2015-2016 will look vastly different. The survivors will be those that see the importantance of innovation and a means to that end.
