On Farm Solar Program

On-Farm Solar Photovoltaics

On-Farm Solar Photovoltaics – On-Farm Energy Management Sub-Program

**PLEASE NOTE**    AS OF JUNE 21, 2017

The On-Farm Solar PV Program will be closing its present Terms and Conditions as of 12:00pm, June 30th, 2017. Following a rate review, the program will re-open with a new set of Terms and Conditions. The known changes to date are as follows:

  1. Retroactive projects will no longer be accepted. If a project has been initiated (ordering or purchasing equipment, equipment delivery, component construction, etc.), an application for this project must be received to the address below no later than 12:00pm, June 30th, even if it hasn’t been completed. **If this application deadline is missed, any project that has been initiated will NOT be accepted in the revised program**
  2. The grant rate will increase to $0.75/Watt to align with the upcoming Residential and Commercial solar programs.
  3. % Eligible cost maximums, system size maximums, and overall grant maximums have not yet been determined.
  4. In order to qualify for the On-Farm Solar PV grant program, an applicant must have an Electrical Distribution Rate Class that is rated as Farm, or equivalent, as of the month of January 2017. Proof of this rate class will be required, and can be found either on your electrical bill or obtained from your electricity retailer.

Program purpose statement

The program provides funding towards solar photovoltaics on Alberta farms. This enables producers to conserve non-renewable fossil fuels and reduce carbon emissions, ultimately reducing the environmental footprint of Alberta's agriculture industry.

The Growing Forward 2 Solar Photovoltaics Program addresses two important industry priorities:

  1. Improved environmental stewardship. When producers make investments in clean energy and reduced carbon emissions, they are recognized for their commitment to sustainable practices.
  2. Improved energy management. Producers who install photovoltaic systems tend to take a renewed interest in their electricity usage; this leads to additional efficiency investments.

What kinds of PV Systems are eligible?

To be eligible for funding, a Photovoltaic system must be:

  • Grid-tied, not off-grid,
  • Approved under Alberta's Micro-Generation Legislation,
  • Positioned to optimize sunshine and minimize shading,
  • Have manufacturer-warranties on: Solar modules, Racking, Inverters and/or Micro-inverters,
  • Producing power that is used in the production of a primary commodity, and
  • Purchased after April 1, 2013, including already-installed systems.

How are costs shared?

Grants are calculated based on an eligible system's nominal wattage, up to a maximum percentage of system cost. Third-party contractor-installed systems are funded at a higher rate than self-installed systems. A maximum of 100 kW of solar PV or capacity$50,000 per applicant is available through the program.

How do I start?

Submit an application form to the Solar Photovoltaics Program, including:

  • a finalized quote showing all eligible project costs and Make & Model for Modules, Racking, and Inverters
  • an approved application to connect to the grid as a Micro-Generator
  • an energy bill from the same electrical service, and
  • an energy assessment report, if applicable.
